The 2013 Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Baseball Tournament had one game left as the Rocori Spartans and Mounds View Mustangs took the field to warm up in the AAA section championship game on June 17, 2013 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minn.

The un-seeded Rocori Spartans faced a tough Mounds View Mustangs that earned a 20-6 regular season record and was favored coming into the game.  Mounds View would emerge with the victory by an 8-0 score.

Mounds View pitcher, Max Knutson, threw a four-hitter and picked up the win, pitching all seven innings, striking out nine batters in a 90 pitch performance.  Reed Pfannenstein from Rocori got rocked in the first inning giving up two runs early.  Mounds View would score two more in the third and four runs in the fourth on their way to an 8-0 victory.

Mounds View’s quarterfinal match against Forest Lake was the only close game of their tournament run.  The 2-1 win came in the bottom of the seventh when Alec Abercrombie drove in Charlie Callahan to win the game by a score of 2-1.  The semifinal game against Coon Rapids was again let with a solid performance by Abercrombie, who batted .750 (3 for 4) in their 9-4 win over Coon Rapids.  They scored five runs in the seventh inning to 9-4.

In the tournament the Mustangs outscored opponents 19-5 as they rolled through the tournament.  The final out of the tournament was a strike out (looking) by Max Knutson, his 70th of the 2013 season, and a fitting finish to a high school career.

Knutson will take his talents to Nebraska, although his name has been bandied about by some as a potential major league draft pick in the next few years.  Keep your eyes and ears open for the name Max Knutson.
