The Chaska Hawks’ road to the Class AAAAA (5A) Semifinal game of the 2013 Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) football tournament has been a long time coming.  The Hawks had not made the MSHSL tournament in almost four decades, since 1974.

The Brainerd Warriors, on the other hand, have made it to the tournament a handful of times in the last decade but have stalled out against the likes of Hutchinson and Eden Prairie.

The Warriors struck first when Senior Cole Smith ran back the opening kickoff 79 yards to go up by seven points just nine seconds into the game.

Chaska counterpunched with a touchdown to tie it up.  The Warriors responded with a touchdown to go up by seven.  At the end of the first quarter the warriors led 14-7.

The Hawks scored the only touchdown of the second quarter when Kolby Seifert ran ten yards into the end zone with two and a half minutes left in the half.  The extra point went wide right.  The score at the half was Chaska Hawks 13, Brainerd Warriors 14.

The third quarter saw Chaska score again on a 58 yard pass from Justin Arnold to Calvin Buesgens.  The Hawks went for the two point conversion but were unsuccessful and led 19-14. The Warriors finished off the third quarter scoring on a 43 yard Connor Gessell run but were unsuccessful on their two point conversion attempt but led none-the-less 20-19.

The score would be the winning touchdown of the game despite the Hawks’ having three possessions in the fourth quarter including a missed field goal.  The final score came to rest at 20-19 with the Warriors advancing to the 2013 Prep Bowl and the Chaska Hawks seeing their special season coming to an end.

The Warriors will take on the Owatonna Huskies for the Class 5A Prep Bowl Championship on November 30 at the Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis, Minn.  Stay tuned to The Minnesota Sports Report for news on the Prep Bowl.
