Canterbury Park on July 3, 2013 was the kick off to a weekend of Fourth of July Festivities at Canterbury Park.  The Fireworks Spectacular was on the docket for the evening and the eighth annual fireworks spectacular.  There were over 15,000 fans in attendance for the action and fireworks.

The day started with a special day of horse racing on Wednesday.  There were unlikely winners in many of the day’s races, introducing many in the audience to the thrills of racing.  The most shocking finish of the day came in the fifth race, as the line of people coming to the track for fireworks was starting to form.  The sixth race was also won by an underdog horse, causing a few cheers and many saddened fans.

The fireworks started about an hour after the races ended.  The display’s backdrop, the gorgeous Minnesota River valley succumbed to the night as the stands filled and fireworks watchers filed onto the track for the start of the show.  As always Kwik Trip, the show’s sponsor treated fans in attendance to a spectacular (as it appropriately named) display of fireworks set to music.

July 4 will feature Canterbury Park’s annual free hot dog day and hot dog eating contest, fun activities for the kids including free pony rides and a wiener dog race.  Stay tuned for photos and updates from the 4th of July activities.
