If you are in Minnesota there are countless activities ranging from local festivals to fireworks shows and carnivals. Here at the Minnesota Sports Report we try to take in a sporting event or two over the week as there are usually some unique and fun sporting activities.
The Minnesota Twins are playing the New York Yankees in a four game home stand running from July 1 through July 4. Minneapolis and St. Paul are both holding festivals throughout the city culminating in a fireworks display in both cities. CityPages has a searchable online calendar. This year we will be covering several events. On July 3 we will take in the fantastic fireworks display (they always do a great job) and horseracing at Canterbury Park. On July 4 we will again be at Canterbury Park for their annual 4th of July Festival see below for details on this family friendly afternoon of fun. On Friday and Saturday we will head up to Duluth to take in Jungle Boy Boxing’s Patriotic Punch Out event at the Otter Creek Event Center just outside Duluth.
This will be the second year we have covered the 4th of July festivities at Canterbury Park. It is truly a family affair with pony rides and face painting for the kids, free hot dogs (for everyone) and some of the best horse racing action in the Midwest. There is an annual hot dog eating contest and the fan favorite Wiener Dog Races.
We will be heading up to Carlton, Minnesota this weekend for the Patriotic Punch Out on Saturday, July 6, 2013, featuring several regional matches and several national bouts with boxers traveling from Virginia and Florida. The full lineup can be found on the Facebook event invitation. We have included the poster in the image gallery as well. If you are in the Duluth and Twin Cities area and like boxing this might be one of the better cards of the year.
Regardless of your plans this Fourth of July, we wish you a happy, fun and safe celebration as we remember that we live in the greatest country conceived in the history of the world, a country where “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness…” If you get a chance, start a tradition of reading the Declaration of Independence at your festivities this year.
