The Minnesota Swarm drops a heartbreaker to the Calgary Roughnecks on February 16, 2013 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. The 4-3 Roughnecks brought to St. Paul one of the most dynamic offenses in the NLL, scoring 97 goals in seven games. The Swarm entered the game looking to improve their season record t0 3-3 and remain undefeated at home.
The first quarter did not go well for the Swarm and saw with the Roughnecks jumping out to a 4-1 lead. The Swarm scored two more goals and the score after 15 minutes was 6-3 Calgary. Scoring for the Swarm was Shayne Jackson, on the power play, Ryan Benesch and Andrew Watt. The fans were treated to the first Andrew Suitor altercation of the season (at home) as “Suits” delivered a heave right hand that caused Roughneck Geoff Snider’s legs to buckle, sending him to the turf.The second period did not fare very well for the Swarm either as the Roughnecks scored two goals in the first five minutes of the quarter. After two the score was 9-5 and a quite home crown tended to their halftime activities. Jordan Macintosh scored and Benesch added a goal to his total for the night. It was a good night for Swarm enforcers as Nik Bilic drove Greg Harnett into the boards hard and forced the referees to put an end to their exchange.
The Swarm dominated the third period scoring 8 goals to the Roughneck’s four. Kiel Matisz opened the scoring 1:26 into the third with a power play goal. Joel Henry, David Earl, Tyler Hass and Greg Downing scored and Jackson added a goal. Earl scored two goals within 30 seconds of each other and Hass put a shorthanded goal in the net, dramatically changing the momentum of the game.
The fourth quarter saw the Swarm take the first lead of the game. They held a 14-13 lead for 1:58 before giving up the first of three shorthanded goals in the fourth quarter. The Swarm scored their 16th goal of the game with about two and a half minutes left but could not get that final goal to tie the game. The final score was 17-16, three of the final four Roughneck goals came shorthanded.
The Swarm will play the Edmonton Rush in a home and home series at Edmonton on the 22nd and in The Hive on the 24th.
