The Minnesota Gophers hosted the St. Cloud State Huskies in a rematch of last year’s North Star Classic finals. The Gophers laced up their skates at Mariucci Arena before the game on November 1, 2014 with the bitter taste of defeat as the Huskies handed the Gophers a Halloween trick, their first loss of the year, a 4-1 drubbing, in St. Cloud the night before.
The Gophers would pull off the post-Halloween win in an overtime thriller at home, winning 4-1 in overtime. Justin Kloos, a sophomore, was the hero of the game, scoring the first goal of the game twelve seconds into the second period as well as the final goal of the game 1:19 into overtime. Kloos would finish the game with a hat trick, the first of his Gopher career, as he increases his season goal tally to five.
With the win the Gophers improve to 5-1-0 on the year and will likely keep them at the top of the NCAA rankings when they are updated this week. The PairWise rankings and USA Today also have the Gophers in first place. The Gophers have won 15 straight games at Mariucci. Minnesota will start conference play in a little over a month, on December 5, when they travel to Michigan State for a weekend series.
The Gophers will host Notre Dame next week in non-conference play. Stay tuned to The Minnesota Sports Report for more photos and stories from Minnesota Sports.
