University of Northwestern Eagles defeat the Crown College Storm to capture UMAC title and bid to NCAA Tournament

The University of Northwestern St. Paul Eagles captured a bid to the 2014 NCAA Division III tournament by defeating the Crown College Storm 72-52 on March 1, 2014.

The game was the Eagle’s to lose after jumping to a 28-19 lead at the half. Crown College shot just 6-32 (19%) in the first half to Northwestern’s 39% shooting percentage. Both teams picked up the offense in the second half with both teams making 12 field goals (Northwestern made 52% of their shots to Crown’s 36%) but the real difference in the second half was the Eagle’s 16 free throws made in the second half.  The entire box score from the game can be found at the UNW Eagle’s website.

The game stopped for about 10 minutes about one third through the second half when Truman Shetler got tangled up under the basket, going for a rebound, and hit the floor hard, dislocating his shoulder.

The Crown Storm was led in scoring by Bryce Williams, who scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds.  Northwestern’s Steven Willey led the Eagles in points while Kyle Ooms picked up a double-double with 15 rebounds and 11 points.  Chanhassen High School’s Eric Witthus made a strong appearance with six points.

The University of Northwestern St. Paul will learn their first-round opponent in the 2014 NCAA Division III tournament on Monday when the selection committee announces the brackets.  The tournament will start the weekend of March 8.
