Eden Prairie, MN – April 16, 2014
The Red Knights of Benilde St. Margaret Hchooligh S hosted 2013 State High School Champions, Eden Prairie Eagles, for their respective season opener under a cold and blustery sky last night on their campus in St. Louis Park.
Both teams were determined to put on a great show of high school lacrosse, and neither team disappointed.. The Red Knights scored first in front of the home crowd to large and enthusiastic cheers. The continued throughout the night as the lead grew to 3-0 before the Eagles were able to answer with a couple of a goals of their own. As the first period progressed, I was left with the feeling that the Eagles were more than a little jittery, having problems passing and keeping the ball in their crosses as they tried to capitalize on several scoring opportunities. The Red Knights seemed to take the game more in stride. After all, they had nothing to prove, having been the number one and two team in state several times.
As the game progressed into the second half, the lead moved between teams, and the Eagles seemed to be able to handle the pressure better. Even so, it was not enough as the Red Knights left the field winning 8-7.
I am sure that, as the season progresses, both teams will find their confidence. When that happens, we will see a faster game with more shots on goal, and significantly fewer errors. I can’t wait for that rematch to happen!
