The buzz surrounding the 2014 Minnesota State High School League Class A Final. The number one seed East Grand Forks Green Wave were the seeded favorites who had not been to the finals in over a decade. The Hermantown Hawks have made it to the final game of the MSHSL Boy’s Hockey Tournament every year since 2010, five consecutive appearances.

Hermantown opened the scoring when Scott Wasbotten scored at 16:26 of the first period. That was the end of the scoring in the first period.
The East Grand Forks Green Wave came out on fire in the second period. Dixon Bowen scored at 2:36, followed by Eddie Eades at 3:43, both even strength goals. Jace Pesch scored at 6:51 on the power play, followed by even strength goals by Grant Loven (14:26) and Reed Corbid (16:28) bringing the Hermantown lead to 5-1 when the time expired in the second period.
Hermantown changed goalies for the third period and Jace Thomas came in cold and made some unbelievable saves on open net goals as the Green Wave had their way with the Hermantown defense. If not for Thomas’ saves the Green Wave would have had three or four easy goals.
Hermantown’s Parker Hawk opened the scoring two and a half minutes into the third period but East Grand Forks came out in the third playing smothering, prevent defense that shut down the Hermantown attack seemingly before it even got off the ground. The Green Wave would add two goals by Cale Mack and Tanner Tweten, opening up a 7-2 lead. Hermantown scored one more goal on the Power Play (Jared Zeleznikar) before the final buzzer ended the game with East Grand Forks winning 7-3, extending Hermantown’s bad luck in the MSHSL championship game.
