Hermantown flies to fifth consecutive title game with win over New Prague

The Hermantown Hawks(#2) met the New Prague Trojans (#3) in the first of four semifinal games (Class A and Class AA) of the 2014 Minnesota State High School League Boy’s Hockey Tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.  The second Class A semi will see St. Cloud Cathedral (4) against the top seed East Grand Forks.  The quarterfinals all saw the higher seed team win.

Hermantown tallied the first goal five minutes in to period one, the next goal one minutes into period two and went up 3-0 one and a half minutes into period three. New Prague scored their first goal with thirteen and a half minutes left in the game on a power play and, for a time looked like they could climb back into the game.

Hermantown scored midway through the 16th minute when Scott Wasbotten picked up his second goal of the game and fifth point of the tournament on an empty net.  New Prague would score 26 seconds later with the extra attacker but the damage was done.

Hermantown moves on to face East Grand Forks in the 2014 MSHSL Class A Championship game on Saturday March 8, 2014.  This championship game will be the fifth consecutive championship appearance for the Hawks.  New Prague will face St. Cloud Cathedral for third place.
