Lakeville North defeats Eden Prairie, captures bid to 2014 MSHSL Hockey final game

The Minnesota State High School League Boy’s Hockey Section AA semifinals’ opened with game featured two metro powerhouse athletic departments, the Eden Prairie Eagles (#3 seed) and the #2 seed Lakeville North Panthers.  The attendance for the Class AA games was announced as 18,879 with over 27,500 attending the combined AA and A Semifinals games.

The two teams had met once this season and the result was a Lakeville North 7-0 blowout.  Eden Prairie was looking to even the score and advance to the 2014 MSHSL Hockey Championship Game.

The scoring started early when Lakeville North put the puck in the net just four minutes into the game. Eden Prairie answered 104 seconds later.  It took just 24 seconds for Lakeville North to regain the lead, and it took Eden Prairie 101 more seconds to tie it back up.  In less than four minutes the game went from 0-0 to 2-2.

Eden Prairie added one more goal in the first and scored eight minutes into the 2nd period to open a 4-2 lead, which they kept until ¾of the way through the second period when Lakeville North scored twice in less than a minute to even the score at 4.

The game ended in a tie although, if you were in the arena, the ice was tilted in favor of Lakeville North, who looked much the sharper team.

The first overtime period ended scoreless and it took 8:26 into the second overtime period before Lakeville North’s Nick Poehling picked up his second goal of the game, third of the tournament, winning the game for Lakeville North.

Lakeville North will face the winner of Edina vs. Eagan on Saturday March 8, 2014 at the Xcel Energy Center for the MSHSL Boys Hockey Class AA Tournament Title.
