The Hopkins Royals entered the 2014 MSHSL Boys’ Basketball State Tournament as the number one seed. The Panthers of Lakeville North were the second ranked team in the tournament. The stage was set for some fireworks and the crowd at Target Center on March 15, 2014 was not disappointed.
The first half was s back and forth sprint that ended with Hopkins leading 41-36 after a last second jump shot by Kamali Chambers to send Hopkins into the half on fire.
Hopkins stayed single-digit in the lead through the first part of the second half. Late in the second half the Royals started to stumble, taking several fouls and allowing Lakeville North to pick up some steam.
With 18 seconds left in the game Lakeville North took their first lead of the second half when hit a two point jump shot saw Lakeville North’s lead at 83-82. Hopkins held the ball for the last shot but a missed three pointer and a rebound from J.P. Macura and the ensuing foul of Drew Stewart with seven seconds left gave Lakeville North two foul shots. Stewart made the first and missed the second. Hopkins launched an unsuccessful three-point shot at the buzzer.
In 18 seconds Hopkins saw their championship dreams come to an end. On the Lakeville North side, a clutch bucket by Connor Flack and a 43 point performance by J.P. Macura gave Lakeville North enough to defeat the Hopkins Royals.
