The Minnesota Swarm was welcomed into the National Lacrosse League (NLL) in 2005. The Swarm celebrates their tenth year in the league with this season and will open The Hive, A.K.A. The Xcel Energy Center, in St. Paul for their first home game of the year on January 18, 2014.
The Swarm has a record of 67-77 over their nine-season history. The last two years have been breakout seasons for the Swarm as they have focused on youth and have trained up quite a crop of dynamic players capable of electrifying The Hive.
Early in the 2013 season the team lost captain Andrew Suitor to a knee injury but rallied around second year standout Jordan McIntosh, rallying to score 41 goals in two games on their way to 5-2 second half of the 2013 NLL season and squeaking into the playoffs.
The Swarm traveled to Toronto and crushed the Rock 20-11 to advance to the East Division Semifinals. The Swarm then traveled to Rochester in a win-and-in situation with the winner advancing to the Champion’s Cup. The Swarm’s season ended in Rochester but it was just the start of the Swarm’s future.
Over the offseason the Swarm stole the draft by trading away several fan favorites such as Ryan Benesch, Evan Kirk and Nic Bilic for draft prospects, current and future. The Swarm will also get back one of the team’s emotional leaders in Andrew Suitor who will make his return as captain for the 2014 season.
The home season includes nine regular season games. The Minnesota Sports Report will be at The Hive for all home games.
