Gophers escape homecoming disaster, win by 3

The story of the game was how young players stepped up to fill holes left by injured starters. Freshman Shannon Brooks stormed on the scene picking up 82 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns. Red shirt freshman Rodney Smith added 94 yards as the Gophers accumulated 209 of their 473 yards on the ground.

The Gopher special teams struggled mightily against the Bobcats kicking teams, fumbling three punts and making a critical error on a kickoff that cost the Gophers 20+ yards. A fourth quarter fumbled punt *was recovered by Ohio, leading to an Ohio TD to bring the score to 21-17. Minnesota took the next drive 88 yards down the field but came up short, settling for a field goal.

Ohio responded with a field goal of their own, leaving Minnesota down 24-20 with 2:36 left in the game. The Gophers would drive down the field, scoring just 30 seconds left on the clock, bringing the score to 27-24. Ohio got as close as the Minnesota 36 yard line before a delay of game pushed them out of field goal range. The hail Mary pass would drop incomplete, leaving the Gophers victorious on Homecoming 2015.

The Gophers will go on the road for a couple weeks before hosting Nebraska on October 17, 2015. Stay tuned to The Minnesota Sports Report for more news and photos from the team.
