Mankato State University wins WCHA Final Five in 3rd period flurry

The Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks win the WCHA Final Five, defeating Michigan Tech 5-2 on March 21, 2015 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Despite trailing 2-1 eight minutes into the third period, the Mavericks went on a 4-0 scoring run over the course of the final 12 minutes of the game and leave St. Paul with the Broadmoor trophy.  Brad McClure scored at 11:25, 14:25 and 18:40 to capture the hat trick and lead his team to victory.

Mavericks’ quarterback, Stephon Williams, saved 23 of 25 shots in the game including shutting out the Michigan Tech offense in the third quarter.

The #2 (RPI) rated Mavericks, going into the NCAA hockey selection Sunday, are expected to be the top seed in the tournament after RPI’s #1 ranked North Dakota fell to the St. Cloud State Huskies in the NCHC tournament in Minneapolis.  In other Minnesota news, the Minnesota Gophers defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes to capture the Big 10 title.
