University of Minnesota Wrestling edges Michigan in thriller

The top ranked Minnesota Gopher Wrestling team hosted the 17th ranked Michigan Wolverines on January 9, 2015 at the Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The dual lived up to every expectation one would have for a competition between two top-20 ranked teams. Last year, the Wolverines’ defeated the Gophers 19-14.

The two teams traded victories with Minnesota taking the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th match. Michigan’s Adam Coon (285 lb class) defeated Minnesota’s Michael Kroells in the 8th match of the night bringing the score to Minnesota 17, Michigan 16 with two matches left in the night.

Michigan took the ninth match of the night when Conor Youtsey defeated Jordan Bremer in a 10-7 decision, putting Michigan up 19-17, giving the Wolverines their first lead of the night.

The final match of the night, in the 133 lb weight class, pitted Gophers’ Chris Dardanes, ranked no. 1 nationally against the Wolverines’ Rossi Bruno, ranked no. 8. The two wrestlers were tied at a point each heading into the final period. Dardanes scored a takedown and tacked on another point, eventually winning the match 4-2.

With the 20-19 win, the Gophers remain undefeated at 7-0 this year and maintain their number one ranking. The Gophers will travel to Ruttger’s on January 10 to face the Big Ten newcomers, the Scarlet Knights, at 11:00 a.m.
