Duluth East runs away from Edina, advances to 2015 MSHSL hockey finals

The defending champion Edina Hornets faced the Duluth East Greyhounds on March 6, 2015 at the Xcel Energy Center in the first of two semifinal games for the evening.

Edina, the #2 seed in the tournament, jumped to a 1-0 lead when Patrick Haug scored on Gunnar Howg of the Greyhounds. Luke Dow of Duluth East would even the score at the 13:44 mark of the first period.

31 seconds into the second period Nick Altmann put Duluth East up 2-1. The Greyhounds went into the next gear and left the Hornets in their dust. Ash Altmann of Duluth East would tack on a beautiful breakaway goal at the 14:19 mark of the third period.

The story of the game is how the sting was taken out of the Hornets’ offense by a smothering Greyhound defense that stayed quite disciplined despite Edina’s best efforts.

The Greyhounds will face the winner of the second semifinal game between Lakeville North and Eden Prairie.
