The puck is set to drop on the North Star College Cup for the third time. The tournament, started when the Big Ten started a college program, was to showcase Minnesota hockey. The 2016 edition is set to be one of the best yet.
The four teams competing this year are the Minnesota Gophers, St. Cloud State Huskies, Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks and the Bemidji Beavers, who enter the tournament as the defending champions. This years’ cup will include three conference leaders and three nationally ranked top 20 teams.
Game one, at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 30, will feature the Mavericks against the Huskies. The Mavericks lead the series by 65-55-10. The Gophers will face the Beavers in the late game, starting at 4:00 pm. The Gophers have an 18-1-1 record against the Beavers.
