The St. Cloud State Huskies, ranked second in the nation coming into the weekend tournament, are crushed by the 18th ranked Ferris State Bulldogs, who secured a round of 16 chance by winning the WCHA tournament. The winning goal was scored by Jared VanWormer just 18 seconds into the overtime period off a rebound from a shot by Gerald Mayhew.
Ferris State led by two going into the third period (4-2) and was playing prevent defense until St. Cloud State capitalized on a power play that led to a goal and major momentum shift. The Huskies played the remainder of the third period like they had all year and tied the game up with eight minutes and change.
Ferris State Bulldogs will play the winner of Saturday’s late game between Boston University and Denver, with the winner of that game advancing to the Frozen Four.
