Gopher hockey splits series with Penn State

The Minnesota Gophers have been sporadic this year, coming into the weekend series against Penn State with a perfect Big Ten record and a less than .500 record against non-Big Ten opponents.

The Gophers briefly led the Big Ten standings when they defeated Penn State on Friday, February 5, 2016.  Unfortunately the Gophers gave up sole posession of first place when they lost to the Nittany Lions the next game on Saturday.  The Gophers are tied with the Michigan Wolverines for first place in the Big Ten conference.

The loss on Saturday, in controversial fashion, featured a challenge in the second period that negated a go-ahead goal by the Gophers on on offsides that was challenged and won by Penn State.  Minnesota head coach Don Lucia said after the game that “You have to execute and you have got to finish late in the game.”  This has been the case in several late losses including to the Bemidji Beavers in the North Star College Cup, giving up a goal with about four minutes left.

The Gophers will be on the road, visiting Ohio State next weekend followed by a home series with the high scoring Michigan Wolverines to wrap up February play.
