Minnesota Gophers improve to 3-0 with win over Miami University (Ohio)

The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers defeated the Miami University (OH) Redhawks 26-3 on Sept. 15, 2018 at TCF Bank Stadium.

With the win, the Gophers will transition to the Big Ten Conference schedule when they head to Maryland on Sept. 22.  Just like in 2017, the Gophers will play the Maryland Terrapins in the first game of the non-conference schedule and they will enter the game with a 3-0 record.

The similarities might end there.

Minnesota has a 59 freshman on the team, 52% with another 20 sophomores, making the team one of the youngest in NCAA this year with underclassmen making up 70% of the team.  Another notable change is the absence of senior running back Rodney Smith who will miss the rest of the 2018 season with a knee injury.  Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck said “We believe Rodney meets all the requirements for the wavier and fully expect that it will be granted.”

Now to the game.

It was the Tyler Johnson (Junior) and Bryce Williams (Freshman) show as the pair combined for 274 yards of offense and wore down the Redhawks’ defense.

Minneapolis native, Tyler Johnson, caught nine passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns.  Johnson caught touchdown passes from both Zack Annexstad and receiver Seth Green, who has become somewhat of a goal line quarterback specialist.  His rushing counterpart did not get into the end zone but carried the ball 33 times, amassing 141 yards.

The bottom line, the Minnesota offense earned 22 first downs and simply wore out the Miami defense while the Minnesota defense looked great, holding the Redhawks offense to drive of less than 10 yards on seven occasions.  The momentum of the game was never against the Gophers.

Look for the Minnesota Gophers to lean on their leaders but there might be some growing pains as their team is so young.  The Terrapins will come into the game with a 2-1 record, coming off a 35-14 loss to Temple.
