St. Cloud State and Denver to meet in NCHC Championship

The St. Cloud State Huskies defeated the North Dakota Fighting Hawks 3-2 in overtime to advance to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff championship game on Saturday March 17.  The first game of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff was a battle with UND and SCSU exchanging goals with the game tying goal coming halfway through the third when UND punched the puck in the net on the power play.

Less than two minutes into overtime it was St. Cloud State’s  Nick Poehling who pickup up a loose puck in the UND zone and punched the Huskies’ ticket to the championship game with a high shot from the top of the circle.

With the win, the UND Fighting Hawks are now more on the bubble and need to win their game tomorrow against the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs to keep their hopes of making the NCAA tournament alive.

The Denver Pioneers defeated the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs 3-1 to advance in the 2018 NCHC Frozen Faceoff.  The game was a rematch of last year’s NCAA Championship game, a game that Denver won in Chicago.  The Bulldogs came out fairly flat footed in the game and went down by a point in the first, tied the game 96 seconds into the second period only to lose the lead when the game winning goal was scored by Colin Staub.  Adam Plant scored a power play empty net goal at the end of regulation to ice the game.

The Bulldogs will play UND for third place and what is likely to be a game that will decide who makes it into the NCAA tournament.
